Electricity Takes Center Stage in Global Energy Investment: Why Stronger Grids Matter
Global electricity demand is entering a new growth phase, putting power grids and infrastructure at the center of the next energy investment cycle. Stronger grids, substations, transformers and distribution systems will be essential to connect new generation with growing electricity demand.

Electricity Is Becoming the Center of Global Energy Investment The global energy landscape is entering a new phase. Electricity is becoming an increasingly important focus of energy investment, driven by industrial activity, data centres, electrification, electric vehicles, cooling demand and the continued expansion of renewable energy. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global electricity demand is forecast to grow by an average of 3.6% per year from 2026 to 2030. This growth is expected to put increasing pressure on power generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure. But generating more electricity is only part of the challenge. The Grid Is Becoming Just as Important As electricity generation and consumption increase, power grids need to expand and become more flexible and resilient. The IEA reports that more than 2,500 GW of renewable energy, energy storage and large-load projects are currently waiting in grid connection queues worldwide. At the same time, annual grid investment would need to increase by roughly 50% by 2030, from around USD 400 billion today, to keep pace with expected electricity demand. This highlights an important point: The next infrastructure cycle will not only be about generating more power — it will also be about building stronger grids. That means investment will be needed across the entire electricity value chain: Power Generation → Transmission → Substations → Distribution → End Users Transformers, switchgear, substations, cables, protection systems and energy storage will all play important roles in this process. What This Means for Power Equipment For power equipment manufacturers, the growth of electricity demand creates new opportunities as well as new technical requirements. Different markets and projects require different transformer capacities, voltage levels, insulation systems, cooling methods, protection configurations and environmental adaptations. Reliable equipment and accurate technical specifications will become increasingly important as grids connect more renewable generation, industrial loads, data centres and energy storage systems. As electricity systems continue to develop, we will continue working with customers, contractors, distributors and project partners to provide suitable power equipment solutions for different applications and markets. The future of energy is not only about producing more electricity. It is also about building the infrastructure that can deliver it reliably. The stronger the grid, the more effectively new generation capacity can serve growing electricity demand.
